Internship: Rearing honeybee queens in vitro | Period: May-August 2025

The aim of this research project is to develop a protocol for rearing honeybee queens in vitro. By rearing queens in vitro we try to gain full control over the development of these biological entities. First of all, the focus will be on becoming proficient in queen rearing techniques, followed up by a more lab focused approach. The use of climate chambers and desiccators will be used as a controlled environment. A central theme within this topic is the use of animal feed (Royal Jelly) and abiotic factors on the development of honeybees. If you are interested, there is also an opportunity to contribute to research related to bee pathology and the use of nutritional supplements in beekeeping. 

Your job

  • Becoming acquainted with bees and beekeeping practices 
  • Formulating of diets 
  • Testing of temperature, humidity, and light on the development of honeybees 
  • Protocol and report writing 
  • Reading of literature 
  • Analyze data 
  • Presenting your results

Are you enthusiastic, a go-getter and does the profile below suit you? 

  • BSc or University level - applied Biology of Horticulture/Agronomy 
  • Entomology & Ecology and relevant study area’s  
  • Independent and proactive 
  • Communication skills in Dutch and English 
  • In possession of driving license B (due to travel between locations)
